Survey/traffic analysis/engineering design/public outreach to improve traffic flow along westbound Fairfax County Parkway.
This $10M interchange improvement accommodates increased northbound + southbound traffic volume. Traffic flow improved by widening the northeast quadrant loop ramp from one to two lanes + adding an acceleration lane.
To overcome the proposed roadway widening challenge of the existing north side retaining wall + noise barrier obstructing the westbound driver’s sight, our practical design solution narrowed the shoulder on the outside curve + widened the inside curve shoulder. Not only providing the needed sight distance—and safety—this solution left the existing retaining wall + noise barrier in place to reduce construction costs by approximately $5M.
