Client: Prince William County, Virginia
Completed in August 2023, the Old Carolina Road Sidewalk project significantly improved pedestrian safety and accessibility by linking the existing pathway to the Broad Run trail in Haymarket, Virginia.
Innovative Design and Strategic Execution
ATCS led the design on this project, focusing on addressing environmental challenges and complex terrain through innovative hydraulic and geotechnical engineering. Our team engineered an innovative drainage inlet system that minimized construction costs and ecological disruption. Additionally, meticulous planning and design ensured the local floodplain’s protection, reinforcing ATCS’ dedication to environmental stewardship.
Navigating Environmental and Structural Challenges
One of the project’s critical achievements was managing an adjacent stream. We created a new channel to divert the adjacent stream, reducing the need for extensive mitigation efforts while preserving the natural habitat.
To address steep slopes, the team cut into the existing hillside to provide ADA-compliant slopes without impacting the floodplain. Additionally, we enhanced the existing open ditch drainage system by introducing innovative open-back drainage inlets that optimized both performance and cost.
Community Impact
The completion of the Old Carolina Road Sidewalk project has transformed daily commutes. It provides safe, convenient access to outdoor areas and fosters connectivity and well-being in the community.
