ATCS Environmental Justice Analysis Tool Wins WTS Central Virginia Chapter Innovation Award

Herndon, Va. — ATCS’ Environmental Justice (EJ) Analysis Tool received the Innovative Transportation Solutions Award from the WTS Central Virginia Chapter for its innovative use of geospatial technology in addressing historically disadvantaged communities. This award recognizes key elements of a project, transportation initiative, solution, or policy led by a female project manager.

ATCS’ development and implementation of the tool highlights the exceptional leadership and execution of Janelle Shank, environmental scientist/GIS specialist, and Kelly Coleman, environmental manager. Their expertise ensured that the tool provided valuable support to the City of Newport News’ grant application, helping the city secure $1 million in funding through the Reconnecting Communities & Neighborhoods Grant Program. This funding will be used for the design and planning of the Southeast Community Greenway Reconnector project. The tool’s detailed analysis and nuanced views contributed to key improvements, including green space expansion, ADA facility upgrades, and enhanced walkability to essential services.

This award is a testament to how fostering female leadership contributes to real advancements in our industry.”
