From Inspiration to Innovation: Celebrating Karuna Pujara’s Engineering Journey

International Women in Engineering Day is a global celebration dedicated to honoring the achievements and contributions of women in the engineering industry. This special day acknowledges the vital role women play in shaping our world through engineering and encourages the next generation of female engineers to pursue their passions. Today, we delve into the inspiring journey of Karuna, a trailblazing engineer whose dedication and innovative spirit have made significant impacts in the industry!

Can you describe your journey into engineering? What inspired you to choose this field?

My father, who was an engineer, was my inspiration. As the youngest child in my family, I often accompanied him and had fun exploring his job. One year on “bring your child to work day,” I joined him at a bridge construction site. It typically takes years to build large bridges, but I was fortunate to see one completed. Just before the ribbon-cutting ceremony, the construction team conducted live load testing, measuring the bridge’s deflection in micromillimeters. Witnessing the meticulous effort and attention to detail required for construction, along with the emphasis on public safety, sparked my interest in civil engineering. Before this experience, I saw bridges merely as places to throw coins into rivers. However, after observing the bridge come to life, I understood its significance in allowing people to safely reach their destinations and return home. This realization made me want to follow in my father’s footsteps and pursue meaningful work in engineering. Now, I design roadways that eventually lead to bridges somewhere!😊

Have you had any mentors or role models who have influenced your career? If so, how have they impacted your professional journey?

My first mentor was my supervisor, Late Veeramachaneni. He encouraged me to learn and practice innovative engineering. 29 years ago, I designed a stream restoration project which is still considered innovative in water resources engineering space! Veeramachaneni supported my training and encouraged me to take risks with innovative practices, while also teaching me to understand and calculate those risks from the start. Though he passed away many years ago, his lessons have left a lasting impact on me. I have applied his teachings in various aspects of my professional and personal life. Thanks to his invaluable guidance, I have achieved milestones in my career that I once never thought possible.

What are some of the biggest challenges you have faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry, and how have you overcome them?

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced as a woman in a male-dominated industry was not having as much confidence as some of my male colleagues and struggling to effectively communicate the value that I bring to a team in order to advance my career. I realized that my strength lies in my uniqueness as a female in the industry and as an individual. In such an environment, qualities like empathy, emotional intelligence, and teamwork are essential. I focused on honing these strengths and making them visible in the work that I do. Focusing on these strengths and integrating them into my work soon opened up new exciting career opportunities.

What advice would you give to young women and girls who are considering a career in engineering?

Be yourself. When in doubt – ask. The world is increasingly complex because the rate of change is accelerating with technology. The skills most needed in the future; flexibility, collaboration, and inclusivity, are often strengths for women. Embrace and utilize these strengths confidently. Show your leadership abilities no matter your title or position and remember to enjoy your work and take pride in what you do!
